Eyeliner tattoo is a semi-permanent makeup technique that involves applying pigment along the lash line and between the lashes to enhance the eyes’ appearance. The choice of eyeliner tattoo style depends on personal preferences, eye shape, and facial features. If you are not a fan of doing makeup every day or want a really accurate eyeliner, permanent eyeliner makeup might be a good choice. It is like a special kind of tattoo for your eyelids, but it does not last forever. Trained experts do this makeup by putting a special colour on your skin’s top layer. Unlike regular tattoos, this colour will fade slowly. That is why this is called “semi-permanent.” This fading lets you adjust for changes in your face, getting older, or new styles.
There are several techniques available for the eyeliner tattoo:
Lash Liner: A line placed between the lashes, creating a subtle enhancement.
Classic Eyeliner: A thin line is delicately drawn on the eyelid, between the lashes.
Winged Eyeliner: A slightly thicker line extends outward with a winged tail.
Smudged Eyeliner: No visible line is drawn; instead, a smoky effect is created along the lashes and eyelid.
Eyeliner tattooing is done using a machine with a fine needle, like the PMU (Permanent Makeup) machine and a pigment that is completely organic and water-based. This pigment is inserted superficially beneath the lower layer of the eyelid using the machine and needle. Due to the high precision required, this procedure should be performed by a skilled and trained technician. A crucial factor in eyeliner tattooing is considering the individual’s eye shape and facial structure, as this forms the basis of designing the eyeliner. Once the preferred style that suits the customer’s eye is determined and designed, the tattooing procedure can begin.
The design process typically takes between 20 to 30 minutes, and the entire tattooing process lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours. The durability of eyeliner tattooing, much like other types of permanent makeup, varies based on individual skin type and daily habits, ranging from approximately 2 to 4 years.
Individuals with young and healthy skin are better candidates for eyeliner tattooing, and each eyeliner style can suit various eye shapes. However, individuals with mature skin showing signs of drooping eyelids and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, should opt for lash liner or classic eyeliner styles. It is important to ensure you are a suitable candidate for the procedure before deciding on getting an eyeliner tattoo.
In certain cases, it may not be safe to proceed with eyeliner tattooing, and it could pose issues for you. This includes individuals who are on blood thinners, have a history of cancer, diabetes, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have specific skin conditions, or are undergoing particular treatments.
Permanent eyeliner can greatly enhance the beauty of the eyes, allowing for the convenience of not having to apply eyeliner daily and saving time. It’s a good option for those sensitive to traditional makeup products and are unable to use them on their eyes for beautification. Additionally, individuals who have lost their natural eyelashes due to various reasons can restore their eye’s beauty with the eyeliner tattoo.
Preparation and before-care for an eyeliner tattoo is similar to the preparation and care for any other cosmetic tattoo procedure. Please read Cosmetic Tattoo | Prerequisites, Before-Care and After-Care Procedure for a comprehensive guide on before-care and after-care procedures for a cosmetic tattoo.
However, in case of an eyeliner tattoo, a few additional considerations are necessary:
1) If you have eyelash extensions, remove lash extensions before the procedure to ensure a clean surface. Please also make sure no sign of the extension’s glue is left on the eyeliners. It is the best to do this a few days before the procedure.
2) If you are using contact lenses, remove contact lenses before the procedure and avoid wearing them for a few days after.
3) Stop using eyelash serums at least 6 weeks before the eyeliner tattoo procedure, as they might cause irritation to the skin and result in bruising or bleeding during the procedure. Also, avoid using these serums for up to 4 weeks after the eyeliner tattoo.
4) Stop using any skincare products on the eye area before and after the procedure.
Immediately after the eyeliner tattoo procedure, the eyeliner might appear very dark and bold. Depending on the skin type, some individuals might experience slight swelling around the eyes, which is normal and usually subsides within 24 hours. Cold compresses can be applied to reduce swelling. It is possible to experience mild itching on the eyelid, but it is important not to scratch the tattooed area, as it can lead to infection. It is recommended to keep the tattooed area dry during this period.
Some skin types may become slightly dry and experience some flakiness around the eyeliner area. The eyeliner itself might appear a bit tight and dry but should not cause any pain. These are all normal occurrences and are part of the healing process.
During this period, the skin might continue to peel slightly, and the eyeliner colour might appear lighter. This fading is completely normal, and it usually takes around 4 weeks for the full colour to appear.
Clients can consider returning for touch-ups during this time, allowing for adjustments to the colour or design if desired.
In conclusion, eyeliner tattooing offers a semi-permanent solution to enhancing the eyes, with different styles catering to various preferences. With proper preparation, aftercare, and the expertise of a trained technician, you can achieve long-lasting and beautiful results for your eyes.
